Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds - Nintendo Switch 2
Race beyond the limits of your world in Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, a high-speed arcade racing experience from SEGA and Sonic Team where every lap can completely transform the competition.
Race across land, sea, air, and space, then blast through mysterious Travel Rings that transport racers into unpredictable CrossWorlds during the middle of a race. Choose from 23 Sonic characters in the base launch roster, customize dozens of vehicles, equip powerful Gadgets, master a huge selection of tracks, and compete locally or online with racers from around the world.
The dedicated Nintendo Switch 2 Edition features upgraded resolution and higher frame rates compared with the standard Nintendo Switch version. The digital Switch 2 Edition launched in December 2025, while the dedicated physical Nintendo Switch 2 Edition was released on March 26, 2026, with SEGA confirming that the full base game is included on the cartridge.

Race Across CrossWorlds
The defining feature of Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is the Travel Ring system.
Instead of completing three identical laps around one track, racers can suddenly pass through a giant Travel Ring and enter another dimension during the race.
The second lap can transport everyone into a completely different CrossWorld, filled with its own scenery, hazards, obstacles, jumps, and racing conditions. The final lap then returns racers to the original course—but even that track can change compared with the opening lap.
This means memorizing one circuit isn't enough.
Players need to react quickly as the race moves between:
- Land
- Water
- Air
- Space
- Alternate Dimensions
- Changing Track Layouts
- Environmental Hazards
Every race can deliver unexpected changes right up to the finish line.
Race with Sonic & Friends
The base game features 23 playable Sonic characters at launch, which SEGA describes as the largest character roster in any Sonic racing game at release.
Race with familiar characters from across the Sonic universe and choose a racer whose characteristics match your preferred playstyle.
The roster has continued expanding through free updates and optional collaboration content after launch. As of August 2026, SEGA has also added free crossover racers such as Classic Sonic and Axel from Crazy Taxi, while premium DLC has introduced additional crossover characters and courses.
Build Your Ultimate Vehicle
Racing performance isn't determined only by which character you select.
Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds includes 45 unique original vehicles that can be combined with racers and customized to create different builds.
Players can experiment with different setups to prioritize:
- Speed
- Acceleration
- Handling
- Drifting
- Recovery
- Item Strategies
- Different Track Conditions
This allows two players using the same racer to create very different racing setups.
70+ Gadgets
The new Gadget system adds an additional layer of strategy.
More than 70 Gadgets can be unlocked and equipped, giving your vehicle special abilities and changing how it behaves during races.
Gadget effects can help players who want to:
- Carry additional items.
- Improve drifting.
- Strengthen particular attacks.
- Change vehicle characteristics.
- Adapt to specific courses.
- Create specialized racing builds.
Instead of simply selecting the fastest vehicle, players can develop their own customized racing strategy.
Powerful Items
Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds includes 23 different items that can dramatically change the outcome of a race.
Use offensive and defensive power-ups to:
- Attack racers ahead.
- Protect yourself from incoming attacks.
- Slow opponents.
- Take advantage of crowded sections.
- Recover from mistakes.
- Fight for position during the final lap.
The item collection includes returning Sonic racing favorites alongside new options such as the Monster Truck.
Grand Prix
Take on seven Grand Prix competitions in the game's single-player racing mode.
Each competition puts players against challenging CPU racers across multiple courses, testing consistency and racing skill rather than performance on only one circuit.
Grand Prix is ideal for:
- Learning Tracks
- Unlocking Content
- Practicing Characters
- Testing Vehicle Builds
- Learning Gadgets
- Improving Racing Skills
World Match
Take your racing skills online in World Match.
Compete against players from around the world, earn ranking progress, and work your way through the competitive grading system.
SEGA's ranking structure progresses from lower ranks toward A Rank, while elite players can ultimately reach Legend Rank. Increasing your rank can also reward additional Gadgets.
Friend Match
Want to compete directly with friends?
Friend Match lets players create online racing lobbies with custom rules.
Nintendo lists support for up to 12 players online, making it possible to build large racing sessions with friends or compete against players around the world.
A Nintendo Switch Online membership and internet connection are required for online multiplayer.
Local Multiplayer
Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is also designed for local multiplayer.
On Nintendo Switch 2, the game supports:
Single System: 1–4 Players
Local Wireless: 2–8 Players
Online: 1–12 Players.
This makes it suitable for:
- Family Gaming
- Friends at Home
- Gaming Parties
- Competitive Local Racing
- Online Multiplayer Sessions
Nintendo Switch 2 Enhancements
The dedicated Nintendo Switch 2 Edition provides improved presentation compared with the original Nintendo Switch release.
Nintendo and SEGA specifically confirm:
Upgraded Resolution
and
Higher Frame Rates.
SEGA has not published one universal fixed resolution/frame-rate specification for every gameplay mode in the product information, so I recommend not advertising specific 4K, 120fps, or other exact performance figures unless your regional packaging specifically confirms them.

Release Date
The original Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds launched for Nintendo Switch and other platforms on September 25, 2025.
The enhanced Nintendo Switch 2 Edition followed digitally in December 2025. Nintendo's US store lists December 3, 2025, while SEGA's Asian release information lists December 4 because of regional timing.
The dedicated physical:
Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition
was released on:
March 26, 2026.
The physical edition is therefore already released and should be listed as an available game rather than a preorder.
Important Physical Edition Information
This is a genuine Nintendo Switch 2 physical edition, not simply the original Switch release in Switch 2-compatible packaging.
Most importantly, SEGA confirms that the physical Nintendo Switch 2 release includes the full base game on the cartridge. It is therefore not a Game-Key Card release.
This is useful information for customers who prefer physical game cartridges that contain the base game rather than requiring the entire game to be downloaded.
An internet connection will still be required for:
- Game Updates
- Online Multiplayer
- Optional DLC
- Free Additional Content
- Online Events
Original Switch Version Upgrade
Players who already own Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds for Nintendo Switch do not necessarily need to buy the whole game again.
SEGA and Nintendo offer a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Upgrade Pack, which unlocks the upgraded graphics and frame-rate features when the original Switch game is played on Switch 2.
Nintendo also notes that the standard Nintendo Switch version itself can run on Nintendo Switch 2 through compatibility, but it will not receive the dedicated Switch 2 Edition enhancements unless the Upgrade Pack is installed.
Save Data Transfer
SEGA confirms that save data from the original Nintendo Switch version can be transferred to the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition.
This allows existing players to upgrade without necessarily losing their previous progression.
Optional DLC
Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds continues to receive additional characters, vehicles, and courses.
Optional content released through the Season Pass and individual packs includes collaborations such as:
- Minecraft
- SpongeBob SquarePants
- PAC-MAN
- Mega Man
- Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Nintendo's current DLC catalog also shows further content continuing through 2026.
These packs are optional DLC and are not included with the standard physical edition unless specifically stated on the package.
Age Rating
The Nintendo US listing gives Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds an ESRB E10+ / Everyone 10+ classification, with:
Mild Fantasy Violence
and the interactive element:
In-Game Purchases.
Age-rating logos can vary according to the region of the physical copy.
