AX5400 Dual-Band WiFi 6 Performance
The ROG Strix GS-AX5400 supports the IEEE 802.11ax WiFi 6 standard while remaining backward compatible with WiFi 5, WiFi 4 and older wireless devices.
| Wireless Band | Maximum Theoretical Speed |
|---|---|
| 2.4GHz WiFi 6 | 574Mbps |
| 5GHz WiFi 6 | 4804Mbps |
| Combined AX Rating | Approximately 5400Mbps |
The 5GHz band uses a 4×4 wireless configuration and supports channels up to 160MHz wide. The 2.4GHz band uses a 2×2 configuration.
These are combined theoretical wireless link rates, not the speed that one device or internet connection will necessarily achieve. Real-world performance depends on the connected device, internet plan, distance, interference, channel configuration and building materials. The complete wireless specifications are available on the official ROG Strix GS-AX5400 specifications page.
WiFi 6 Technologies
The GS-AX5400 supports several WiFi 6 technologies designed to improve performance in networks containing multiple devices.
OFDMA
OFDMA allows a WiFi channel to be divided into smaller resource units, helping the router communicate with several compatible devices more efficiently.
MU-MIMO
MU-MIMO enables simultaneous data communication with multiple compatible devices instead of serving each device entirely one at a time.
1024-QAM
1024-QAM enables higher wireless data density under suitable signal conditions, helping compatible WiFi 6 devices reach higher connection rates.
160MHz Channels
The router’s 5GHz band supports channel widths up to 160MHz. A compatible WiFi 6 client and suitable local wireless conditions are required to use a 160MHz connection.
Dedicated Gaming Port
One of the router’s four Gigabit LAN ports is designated as the Gaming Port. A PC or gaming console connected to this port is automatically given traffic priority without requiring complicated manual configuration.
It is suitable for wired connections from:
- PlayStation 5
- PlayStation 4
- Xbox Series X or Series S
- Xbox One
- Gaming desktop PCs
- Gaming laptops
- Nintendo Switch docks
- Streaming or cloud-gaming devices
The Gaming Port is a Gigabit Ethernet port, with a maximum Ethernet link rate of 1Gbps. The router does not have a native 2.5Gbps Ethernet port.
Game Boost and Adaptive QoS
Game Boost uses Adaptive Quality of Service technology to prioritize latency-sensitive gaming applications over less urgent traffic.
This can help when other users are simultaneously:
- Streaming video
- Downloading large files
- Browsing the internet
- Uploading data
- Using cloud services
- Making video calls
Adaptive QoS cannot reduce latency created by the game server, internet service provider or the physical distance to the server. It primarily manages competing traffic within the local network.
Gear Accelerator
Gear Accelerator allows selected wired or wireless devices to receive higher priority through the router’s management interface.
This makes it possible to prioritize a gaming PC, console or mobile device even when it is not connected to the dedicated Gaming Port.
Mobile Game Mode
Mobile Game Mode can be activated through the ASUS Router mobile application. It is designed to prioritize traffic from a smartphone or tablet during mobile gaming.
Supported gaming features—including the dedicated Gaming Port, Gear Accelerator and Adaptive QoS Game Boost—are described on the official ROG GS-AX5400 product page.
OpenNAT Port Forwarding
OpenNAT simplifies port-forwarding configuration for supported games. ASUS presents the feature as a three-step process that allows the user to select a game and device rather than manually entering every rule.
Correct port forwarding may help with:
- Hosting multiplayer sessions
- Voice-chat connectivity
- Joining online lobbies
- Resolving certain restrictive NAT issues
- Running selected gaming or network services
Port-forwarding results depend on the internet provider and connection type. OpenNAT cannot bypass Carrier-Grade NAT or restrictions imposed by an ISP without an appropriate public IP configuration.
ASUS AiProtection Pro
The GS-AX5400 includes ASUS AiProtection Pro powered by Trend Micro. Its security functions include:
- Router Security Assessment
- Malicious Website Blocking
- Two-Way Intrusion Prevention System
- Infected Device Detection and Blocking
- Parental controls
- Website and application restrictions
- Custom internet schedules
ASUS advertises AiProtection Pro for this model as lifetime-free internet security, meaning it does not normally require a separate recurring subscription. Continued functionality remains dependent on ASUS and Trend Micro service and update availability. ASUS product information
WPA3 Wireless Security
The router supports modern WPA3-Personal encryption as well as WPA2 and selected legacy security modes.
Available security functions include:
- WPA3-Personal
- WPA2-Personal
- WPA/WPA2 Enterprise
- Firewall
- WiFi MAC-address filtering
- URL filtering
- Keyword filtering
- Network-service filtering
- Guest networks
- WPS
For maximum security, WPA2 or WPA3 should be used whenever supported by connected devices. The administrator password and wireless passwords should be changed during initial setup.
VPN Fusion
VPN Fusion allows the router to maintain a VPN connection while selected devices continue using a normal internet connection.
For example:
- One streaming device can connect through a VPN.
- A gaming PC can use the regular internet route for lower latency.
- Other household devices can follow individually assigned connection rules.
The router supports VPN client and server functions, including OpenVPN, IPSec and certain legacy protocols. Compatibility depends on the VPN provider and router firmware.
Third-party VPN subscriptions, accounts and service charges are not included with the router.
ASUS Instant Guard
Instant Guard uses the user’s GS-AX5400 to create a secure VPN tunnel when the user is connected to public WiFi.
It is intended for situations such as:
- Hotels
- Airports
- Coffee shops
- Restaurants
- Public hotspots
- Shared wireless networks
Instant Guard requires a working internet connection at the router’s home location, a compatible mobile device and correct remote-access configuration.
ASUS AiMesh Support
The GS-AX5400 can operate as an AiMesh primary router or an AiMesh node. Multiple compatible ASUS routers can be combined to extend WiFi coverage under centralized management.
AiMesh is suitable for:
- Large apartments
- Multi-floor homes
- Offices
- Homes with difficult WiFi dead zones
- Expanding an existing compatible ASUS network
Performance between AiMesh nodes depends on placement and the wired or wireless backhaul connection. Since this is a dual-band router, wireless backhaul shares available 5GHz capacity with connected clients. Ethernet backhaul is preferable where practical.
Gigabit Ethernet Connectivity
The router provides:
- 1 × Gigabit Ethernet WAN port
- 4 × Gigabit Ethernet LAN ports
- 1 × dedicated Gaming LAN port among the four LAN ports
- WAN Aggregation support
- LAN Link Aggregation support
- Dual WAN support
Link aggregation can combine supported Gigabit connections for an aggregate link capacity of up to 2Gbps with compatible equipment. It does not make an individual Gigabit port operate at 2.5Gbps, and a single connection may still be limited to 1Gbps.
USB 3.2 Gen 1 Port
The USB 3.2 Gen 1 port can support compatible storage devices and selected USB applications, including:
- Network file sharing
- Samba server
- FTP server
- Media server
- AiDisk
- ASUS AiCloud
- Download Master
- Printer or storage functions supported by firmware
- Compatible 4G/5G mobile-tethering functions
Supported storage file systems include NTFS, HFS+, FAT variants and selected Linux ext file systems. Actual USB transfer speeds depend on the drive, file type, router workload and network connection.
Four External Antennas
The GS-AX5400 uses four external antennas to provide dual-band wireless coverage. Proper positioning can help improve signal distribution.
For better results, the router should be placed:
- In an open and central location
- Above floor level
- Away from thick walls and metal cabinets
- Away from microwave ovens
- Away from crowded electronic equipment
- With space around it for ventilation
Wireless range cannot be guaranteed because every building and interference environment is different.
ASUS Aura RGB Lighting
The front of the router features customizable ASUS Aura RGB lighting, giving it a distinctive ROG gaming appearance.
Lighting effects can be adjusted through the supported ASUS interface. The lighting can also be disabled if a darker or more discreet setup is preferred.
Supported Operating Modes
The GS-AX5400 supports:
- Wireless Router Mode
- Access Point Mode
- Repeater Mode
- Media Bridge Mode
- AiMesh Router Mode
- AiMesh Node Mode
Available features may differ depending on the selected operating mode.
